During the process of handcrafting batik, the fabric must be designed and dyed here. The artisan creates a repeat design by "stamping"
the cotton cloth with hot wax. The wax not only leaves a motif pattern on the entire cloth, it also protects sections
of cloth from the dyes. As the artisan continues to stamp and dye, an array of colors are built up from light to dark.
This "resist" technique where the wax resists the dye process will eventually be removed from the entire
fabric revealing a variety of colors and patterns like the ones in the beautiful wrap to the left.

Finished cotton batiks are left to dry in the sun. This "fixes" the dye in the fabric.

A characteristic
of batik occurs when linear patterns develop from the dyes that manage to creep under the wax.

The arduous process of the batik
begins with the production of hand carved stamps. Original motif designs are carved into the matrix of a calabash gourd
and fashioned with a handle that will aid in the stamping process.
